Tip: Ideas For Blackberry Users
Are you the Master OR the Slave of your Blackberry? I've addressed this with email in general and now it's time to also address this issue with the Blackberry.

In preparation for a recent session on email, I spoke with several people who felt obligated to check their Blackberry all the time (hence the surname "Crackberry") and wanted to know how to better manage it. (I personally use a Blackberry and understand its addictive qualities!)

My approach is pretty simple: look at the pro's and con's of something and then make intelligent conclusions. So here's my working pro and con list for the Blackberry followed by my conclusions. What do you think?!

Some Blackberry Pro's:

  • Receive and send mail on the go
  • Meant for managing exceptions
  • Look and feel busy
  • Keep current with emails coming in the office
  • Send and receive instant messages
  • Track to-do's in the notes section
  • Carry your contact database with you
  • Great for responding quickly for those in Customer Service and Sales

Some Blackberry Con's:

  • Constant demand for attention 24/7 (like a hungry baby in your pocket).
  • Lines blurred between work and personal life.
  • Encourages compulsive surfing and checking.
  • Viewed as rude when you allow it to interrupt your conversation.
  • Feel overwhelmed with emails you still need to respond to when you return to the office.
  • Multi-tasking mania which causes distraction overload.
  • Quick response may not be well-thought out creating more emails.
  • Former thinking and reading time now filled with email.
  • Use prevents time for day-dreaming and creative thought.
  • Keeps you from focusing on what really matters.

My (Intelligent) Conclusions:

  • Turn off the email notification (not even vibrate) to become the master, not the slave.
  • Set boundaries - consider restricting usage during meetings, at night, at the dinner table, and especially in the bathroom!
  • Make time for the human thought process - allow yourself to read or think instead of checking email.
  • Practice focusing on one thing at a time - consider taking up yoga, meditation, lap swimming, running or other individual activity.
  • Use common sense and know when it is appropriate to use and more importantly, when not.
Looking for Affiliates
Rev It Up Reading Logo

As many of you know, I recently developed an interactive online speed reading course called Rev It Up Reading. It only takes 3 hours to complete and is available online 24/7. It is great for high school and college students and busy professionals.

I am looking for new affiliates for this program. An affiliate is an organization or individual who is willing to share information about the course in exchange for a monetary commission if the course is purchased from them.

Also, if you are part of a group where members are interested in taking this course, we can create a special discount coupon for your group! A perfect idea for book clubs, groups of graduating high school seniors, returning college students and others. Just contact us with your request.

If you have interest in becoming an affiliate, want a special discount coupon for your group or just need more information, please call my office at 1-877-664- 7323 or contact us through our website form.
