Stress Reduction Tip Series |
 |
|
Starting this month, I'd like to share with you some
SIMPLE tips for helping reduce stress in your life.
People frequently tell me after my workshops that in
addition to learning some new strategies, they now
feel confident they know some ways to reduce their
stress. So I will share with you some of the BEST
stress reducing strategies people have told me work
for them, many of which I teach and/or personally
use. I hope you find them useful too! |

Tip: Your Personal "Reset" Button |
 |
|
About five years ago, my mother gave me a wonderful
gift of a weekend away with her at The Kripalu
Center, a yoga and meditation center in Lenox, MA. I
had never been there and was not particularly into
the yoga/meditation thing. But that weekend started
a shift in my life. . .for the better.
Bottom-Line: I learned how to live more in the
moment and how to use my breath to do it. As a
type-A personality, stopping to breathe
intentionally was not something I ever thought about
doing. But once got in the habit of doing it several
times a day, I was amazed at how clear my mind
became and how focused I could become. All through
just taking a series of deep breaths.
I challenge you to take 60 seconds and try this
right now. After reading these directions, follow
them with your eyes closed.
- Sit tall in your chair.
- Take a DEEP breath, as deep as you can
through your nose (if not blocked).
- Exhale slowly through your nose (or mouth)
and push out all the stale air.
- Inhale again, this time starting the breath
from the base of the belly around the belly
button, puffing it out like a balloon as you
fill it. Feel the deep breath rise through your
midrift into your chest. . . and slowly release.
- Do AT LEAST 6 to 10 more of these DEEP
breaths being acutely aware of any tension in
your body and breathing into it to release it.
Be aware of the sounds, smells and textures
around you.
- When you are ready, slowly open your eyes.
- Enjoy life with a little more focus and
calm.
Another way to get guided practice in getting
control of your breath is through the practice of
yoga. The combination of breathing and body movement
is a powerful stress reliever.
So when you are feeling stressed or just need to
refocus, remember to BREATHE!
