Tips to Help You Work Smarter, Faster and Just Plain Better
March 2006
Our New and Improved Focus
This month starts a new series of tips. In addition to the valuable reading tips I have shared over the past four years, I am now branching out into other soft-skills areas to help you become more professionally productive and personally satisfied. I will provide short tips that I hope will help every one of you feel more in control of your life – both at work and at home. (If you are still looking for my reading tips, I will still share a few per year or you can visit my website for a selection posted there.)

Where DOES Your Time Go?
Know that time doesn’t GO anywhere – you decide how to spend it. The most satisfied people I know spend most of their time wisely doing productive activities while the most unsatisfied people waste it doing unproductive activities.

The wise time spenders have goals; they know what they want to have, do or be, both in the short- and long-term. And when it comes time to figuring out what the best use of their time is, they choose activities that are important to them based on what they want out of their lives. So if you haven't written your goals down or thought about them in awhile, consider making an appointment with yourself to create or revise them (or if you work for a company, consider our Paper Room Career Coaching.)

In our Classic Time Management training program, in addition to helping you set goals, we share other smart strategies to help you spend your time more wisely. Here are 5 useful ones:

  1. Prepare for the morning the night before. Before you leave work or end your day, spend a few minutes writing down what is most important to get done the next day.
  2. Schedule a realistic day. Leave room between meetings and appointments and some extra time for the unexpected.
  3. Check your email 3 times per day (or at least not every 5 seconds!). The beauty of technology is that your messages will be there when you are ready to receive them. Turn off your email notification ding and get back to other work.
  4. Learn to say “No!” No, I will not check my email now. No, I will not pick up the phone until I‘m done with this project. No, I will not go . . . Saying “No” sometimes allows you to get done what you want and to spend time in the ways you choose.
  5. Get enough sleep. Do you know how much sleep you need? Are you getting it? When you are well-rested, you are more capable of handling anything that comes your way.

Here's hoping you spend your time on things that are truly important . . . TO YOU!
