Ten Ideas to Rethink
.
When we were beginning readers, our teachers instructed us on what they thought were sound ideas concerning our reading. And at the time, they were helpful. However, as we matured, the ideas became outdated and inefficient for our ever-growing reading and learning workload.

Unfortunately, many of us have become mentally stuck with them preventing us to move forward with our reading abilities. I humbly list those ideas in bold below followed by my take on why they should be reconsidered. Which one(s) do you need to let go of?!

  1. You have to read every word. Who's got the time??! Learn to let some of them go.
  2. You need to sound out every word aloud OR in your head. This encourages word-for-word reading which slows us down to around 150 words-per-minute. Not very effective.
  3. Don't use your hands or fingers to read. The eyes follow movement so moving your hands appropriately DOWN (not across) the lines of text can help you move your eyes faster and help you focus.
  4. You need to completely understand everything you read. Sometimes getting the gist is enough! Besides, who's testing us on it now?!
  5. You need to remember everything you read. We remember things through repetition over time so trying to memorize something on a first read is unrealistic. Better to have a great system of finding it again (hint - a filing system!).
  6. Go for quantity - the more the better. If you have all the time in the world, great, but try quality instead!
  7. Don't skim - that's cheating. Some material should only be skimmed. I call it "smart reading".
  8. Don't write in your books. Schoolbooks were the property of the school but now that you buy your own, make it your own. Just like an animal marks its territory, so should you mark your books with effective highlights and margin notes.
  9. It doesn't matter what you read as long as you read. See #6.
  10. Speed is not important. Not only does reading faster help you read more in less time, it also greatly increases your concentration, which in turn improves your comprehension which ultimately helps retention. A great argument for increasing reading speed!
