Finding More Time to Read
.
Don't you just envy people who always keep up with their reading? You may be surprised to know that a quick reading speed is not the only way to get caught up. It's those who devote ENOUGH TIME to their reading that are not haunted by their "to read stack."

That makes sense you say, BUT you're feeling time- starved? Review these common-sense suggestions and see which ones you already do and which ones just might work for you:

  1. ALWAYS carry hand-selected articles (or other material) with you where ever you go - in your car, in your day planner, in your briefcase, etc. You never know when you'll have a free few minutes.
  2. Watch less (or no) TV! If you watch an hour or more of television a day (which many Americans do), just think how much reading you could get done if you swapped TV time with reading a few days a week.
  3. Unsubscribe to personally invaluable materials so you don't waste your reading time on useless material. To refresh your memory, look at our previous tip Get the Best and SKIP the Rest!
  4. Plan it! Make an appointment with yourself, for example, during work hours (this may mean moving to a conference room to get peace and quiet), on weekends (you can read while kids are watching cartoons) or during your commute (if you have one where you're not driving!)
  5. Read at your peak time(s) of day - your most mentally awake and alert times. If you are a morning person, make some time then. If you are a night owl, carve out time after dark.
  6. Upgrade your reading skills so however much time you do spend, you get a lot accomplished! Consider taking our on-line course called "Speed Reading: Read More in Less Time", available to anyone starting October 4 at no charge through Barnes and Noble On-Line University.
